Important News for your Career in Financial Planning
There are new Certified Financial Planner Certification Program Guidelines that became effective on July 1st 2010. The changes to the program ensure future candidates have access to the most meaningful educational opportunities, practical and relevant work experience and an incremental path for demonstrating competence in applying and integrating the vast array of knowledge required for professional financial planning. Please see notes below if you are in the midst of completing the “Core Curriculum” courses or have not yet passed the CFP Examination (written June 2010) and to past CFP professionals seeking reinstatement after June 2010.

For example, if the first step was completion of a Core Curriculum program (as it would be for the majority of candidates), and more than 12 years have passed since program completion, then the
candidate will be required to complete another Core Curriculum program. completion of Capstone Course, passing FPE1, passing FPE2, completion of qualifying financial planning work experience) be within the same 12 year time
window.
Exam Description
Financial Planning Examination Level 1 (FPE1) is a competency-based multiple choice examination of up to four hours duration. Approximately 100 multiple-choice items will appear on the examination. It is based directly on the CFP
Professional Competency Profile and the FPE1 Blueprint. FPE1 is designed to assess the competence expected of
candidates who have completed a Core Curriculum program only but who may not have financial planning work experience. In passing FPE1, the candidate will be entitled to enter the Registered Candidate program, and will earn FPSC’s endorsement as an FPSC Registered Candidate.
Those seeking to write FPE1 are advised to review all requirements for CFP certification to ensure that they will be able to obtain the credential once all steps are completed. In particular, candidates are advised to review the Work
Experience requirements and the attestations required to obtain the licence to use the CFP Marks.
Financial Planning Examination Level 2 (FPE2) is a competency-based constructed-response and multiple choice
examination of up to six hours duration. It is based directly on the CFP Professional Competency Profile and the FPE2 Blueprint. FPE2 is designed to assess the competence expected of candidates who have completed all program
requirements and are ready to attain CFP certification.
Those seeking to write FPE2 are advised to review all requirements for CFP certification to ensure that they continue to be able to obtain the credential once all steps are completed. In particular, candidates are advised to review the Work Experience requirements and the attestations required to obtain the licence to use the CFP Marks
